The historic Barker Lake Golf Course is only a beautiful, twenty-minute drive away from Hayward, WI. The scenic drive displays a taste of the lakes that the Hayward Area has to offer and the golf course itself is the definition of picturesque. Susan Mike and her husband bought the golf course after seeing it posted in a newspaper. I
had a chance to sit down with Susan and discuss the rich history of the 1920’s styled golf course.
Joe Soltis and his future wife were only twelve when they came to this country, all by themselves. Joe worked at a brewery in Chicago until Prohibition kicked in. Then, he switched to the lucrative business of bootlegging. In his spare time, he opened his very own golf course and resort in Winter, WI. The perfect place for him and his gangster pals to hang out. The course, being built in the 20’s, was built by hand a lot of the time as they didn’t have heavy machinery. They even used dynamite to clear the property!
Visitors of Barker Lake Golf Course are treated to this wonderful history. With historic brochures and golf clubs, the gangster history comes to life in the club house. The intriguing past of the course draws all kinds of golfers in, from the loyal tourist to the golf historian. The course has been visited by golfers who use hickory clubs and dress in the 1920’s attire, playing the game like it was a century ago!
